Objective(s): To perform limited geotechnical analysis to confirm assumptions on foundation type and location and routing; to identify any archeological or cultural resources that may be impacted by the transmission line; and to conduct environmental field work.
Project Description: The objectives of the study are as follows: - Perform limited geotechnical analysis to confirm assumptions on foundation type and location and routing; - Identify any archeological or cultural resources that may be impacted by the transmission line; - Conduct environmental field work e.g. wildlife sightings and documentation, plant samples, caribou migration trails; and - Use the information collected as outlined above to finalize routing, consult with communities and obtain regulatory approvals to construct the project. Environmental Program: NT Energy will review relevant literature and information to determine if archeological or culturally significant sites are located in proximity to the transmission line. Existing studies, literature and information available from the Tlîchô Land Use Plan/Tlîchô Government will be primary sources of information. Sites that require further study in the field will be identified and field work will be conducted. Engineering Program: Soil and rock samples will be collected by hand and will be used to perform limited geotechnical analysis to confirm assumptions on foundation type and location. The route will be flown via helicopter to confirm the location of existing winter access roads and any new winter access that may be needed for construction of the project. For the field component of the study, there may be opportunities for 1-2 local people to assist with work in the field. Work would consist of: helping identify sites of archeological or cultural importance, collecting plant samples, collecting rock samples and other related tasks. NT Energy will work with its aboriginal partner on this project, Tlîchô Investment Corporation, to hire local aboriginal field assistants. Additional work will also be done after the field season to consult with local communities on the proposed transmission line routing. Results of the study will be shared with the Tlîchô Investment Corporation. Ongoing consultation with Tlîchô Communities and the Tlîchô Government will be conducted and study results presented. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 2, 2013 to November 30, 2013.
