Objective(s): To provide a better understanding of the permafrost under EL 462 and EL 463 and to delineate potential aggregate deposits.
Project Description: The objectives of this research is to provide a better understanding of the permafrost under EL 462 and EL 463 and to delineate potential aggregate deposits. Objectives will include mapping: permafrost distribution, massive ice bodies (including wedge ice), depth to massive ice, lower contacts of massive ice, zones of thermokarst, ice rich sediments (thaw sensitive), active layer, and aggregate delineation. 1. Geophysical Survey Geophysical methods (non-intrusive) will be used to identify the potential for permafrost and aggregates. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Resistivity (OhmMapper) tools will be pulled behind an All-Terrain-Vehicle. These tools measure variations in the physical properties (electrical and electromagnetic) of subsurface materials without actually taking any samples. The field survey is anticipated to take 10 days involving the 2-person crew plus a local environmental (wildlife) monitor. The data collected will be processed and interpreted to identify areas and depths of potential permafrost and aggregates. 2. Heli-Portable Drilling Program The heli-portable drilling program will follow the geophysical survey to ground-truth the data. The program will involve drilling up to 30 holes (4" diameter and up to 30m deep) to verify permafrost and aggregate distribution identified in the geophysical surveys. Since the geophysical surveys will be conducted on ATVs, it is not anticipated that additional clearing will be required to make room for placement of drills and generators. The heli-portable drilling program is anticipated to take approximately 10 days involving the 3-person crew plus a local environmental (wildlife) monitor. This study is being conducted on behalf of Husky Oil Operations Ltd. The results of this study will be incorporated into Husky's stakeholder engagement/community consultation program. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 5, 2013 to October 1, 2013.
