Objectif(s): To increase the existing Tlicho Multimedia Online Dictionary and the related iPhone/iPad app Yati by adding the placenames information previously researched with Tlicho elders (Dogrib Treaty 11 Council 2002), and doing additional research with Tlicho people of all ages.

Description du projet: The purpose of this research project is to increase the existing Tlicho Multimedia Online Dictionary and the related iPhone/iPad app Yati by adding the place names information previously researched with Tlicho elders (Dogrib Treaty 11 Council 2002), and doing additional research with Tlicho people of all ages. You can look at the dictionary on the internet now: http://tlicho.ling.uvic.ca. Other goals are language and research skills development and education, both in the community and at the university. The research involves a variety of procedures and methods. The products of the research ideally will include place names from throughout the Tlicho region, and any associated stories and histories. Methods will include: • interviewing individuals (potentially including photography, audio or video recording) -- Individuals with particular expertise or domains of knowledge, and confirming and checking information; • interviewing groups of participants (potentially including photography, audio or video recording) -- research specific domains of knowledge, and confirming and checking information; • analysis of published and non-published stories, including the resources of the Tlicho elders' audio database and archive; • Analysis of the place names research already researched with Tlicho elders (Dogrib Treaty 11 Council 2002); • use of the knowledge and observations of individual researchers; and • use of place names information from the work of Emile Petitot from the last half of the 1800s, from the collection published by Donat Savoie. This project is a community-based project and aims to increase Tlicho knowledge of language, place names, stories about land, and other aspects of Tlicho knowledge. Four of the co-investigators are Tlicho people. They are involved in this project through their employment. Though this is a small project according to its present funding base, a larger project is envisioned with greater economic benefits to Tlicho community members. The goals of the project are social, educational, and cultural: to involve community members in place names research and dictionary work, and therefore to benefit the community with skills and expertise development, improvement and addition to available resources (dictionaries) and Tlicho knowledge, contributions to Tlicho language and culture revitalization and maintenance, increased prestige for Tlicho language and culture, and the valuing of employment in the education, knowledge, and culture sectors of the economy. There will be public meetings about the research. The research results will be available through the on-line Tlicho dictionary (http://tlicho.ling.uvic.ca) and on the Yati iPod app. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from February 14, 2013 to December 31, 2013.
