Project Description: The objective of the research is to collect life histories of five established Northern artists that outline their development as artists during their youth. The research team feels this information may help support current young artists in the NWT. In this case study of five established Northern artists the research team will collect life histories. These life histories will emerge out of a semi-structured interview that takes a narrative approach. The intent is to probe how and why these established artists developed their artistic abilities in their youth and to discover the factors that hindered and helped this development. In this small study of five established artists who were originally from remote communities in the Northwest Territories, the research team will interview artists who live in Yellowknife and cities in Ontario. It is the hope that their stories will provide insight into how today's young artists can be better supported in the small communities in the NWT. The research team will present at the next Territorial Teacher's association in addition to publishing in Education practitioner and research journals. The results will also be communicated with the artists themselves who may find it interesting to learn what the other artists in the study have had to say. The research team will also direct individuals and groups to the summary on the Aurora database. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from December 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
