Objective(s): To provide training in the use of a youth screening tool for mental health and substance use concerns to service providers from agencies who have agreed to all use the same screening tool; to understand the impact of training and project participation on service providers; and to better understand youth mental health and substance use needs through their responses on the screening tool.

Project Description: The overall objectives of this national project are: 1) to provide training in the use of a youth screening tool for mental health and substance use concerns to service providers from agencies who have agreed to all use the same screening tool; 2) to understand the impact of training and project participation on service providers; and, 3) to better understand youth mental health and substance use needs through their responses on the screening tool. This project is being implemented in 7 – 10 communities across Canada. All service providers who are receiving project training will be asked to complete a short, anonymous questionnaire about their youth concurrent disorders-related attitudes, opinions, knowledge and practices on 3 occasions: Prior to participation in training; after training, and at the end of the initiative. All youth who have completed the screening tool to allow an anonymous copy to be shared with the national project team in order to collate information across youth and across sites. This information will be used to prepare a local report about youth needs and the local report will feed into a national report. The project involves providing local health and social service professionals with training about youth mental health and substance use concerns, early identification and intervention. It also involves working with local professionals to use a common screening tool for youth mental health and substance use concerns. Information gathered will be brought back to the community for locally-guided data analysis and interpretation, resulting in a local report of youth needs. This local report will also feed into a national report. This project involves joint data analyses, interpretation and report preparation. After the local report has been finalized by the local and national team, it will be shared with other communities across Canada, including NWT. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 4, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
