Objective(s): To collect a species of butterfly (P. faunus arcticus) from sites in the Yukon and Northwest territory, including the meadows surrounding Black Mountain in the Richardson Mountains.
Project Description: A goal of this research project is to conduct a taxonomic assessment of butterflies. The studies objective is primarily to collect a species of butterfly (P. faunus arcticus) from sites in the Yukon and Northwest Territory, including the meadows surrounding Black Mountain in the Richardson Mountains, the Type Locality of this subspecies. These specimens will facilitate research that will assess the validity of the cenveray subspecies. In addition, a network of haplotypes will be constructed, based on the mitochondrial COI gene, and a mismatch analysis will be performed to determine if genetic structure has been influenced by a sudden expansion in population size or long term stability. The investigator will make short-term use of sites from Whitehorse, Yukon Province to Inuvik, NWT. With the exception of the Richardson Mountains, all sites will be accessed from the Dempster Highway. From the highway, the investigator will travel by foot to the collection sites. The investigator will camp in designated campsites along the highway. In the Richardson Mountains, the investigator will camp, will not start fires, and remove any garbage that is generated. The results of this research will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals of entymology/lepidoptry. A trip report will be prepared, if requested. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 2, 2011 to August 8, 2011.
