Objective(s): To assist Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) with its ongoing work to clean up abandoned mine sites across the Northwest Territories.
Project Description: The objective of the Great Slave Lake Area Mines Site Assessment and Remedial Planning Program is to assist Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) with its ongoing work to clean up abandoned mine sites across the Northwest Territories. This will be accomplished through a series of Environmental Site Assessments and Risk Assessments, followed by the development of a Remedial Action Plan (RAP). Samples will be collected manually at the abandoned mines, with a zodiac and motor the only required equipment. Soil, vegetation, water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, fish, tailings, wasterock, and any hazardous materials will be collected manually for analysis by laboratory methods. Visual inspections will be conducted by air and foot by mine specialists at the abandoned mines. The extent of sampling required has not yet been determined, and the ARI will be updated in early 2011 when project details have been approved. Upon completion of the field work and receipt of all the sample results, reports will be prepared for INAC CARD. INAC CARD will be responsible for ultimately communicating the results to the communities. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 11, 2011 to July 20, 2011.
