Objective(s): To trace the history of the aquatics program from a GNWT program to a community-based program.

Project Description: This research project engages with the GNWT and the NWT Recreation and Parks Association, and thus members of the NWT public. The researchers will be conducting archival research of publically-available documents held by each organization. The goal of the research project is to better understand the ways in which sport and recreation programming can better meet northerners' (and especially Aboriginal northerners') needs. In so doing, the researchers hope to provide insight into how programs, especially those pertaining to pools and waterfronts, might be better able to recruit, hire, train, and retain northern workers; be inclusive of Aboriginal knowledge; and lead to better water safety programming. Archival research will be conducted on documents from the Government of the NWT and the NWT Recreation and Parks Association (which took over the Aquatics Program from the GNWT in the late 1990s). The results will be given to the GNWT, NWT Recreation and Parks Association, published in academic journals, submitted to northern newspapers, and deposited in open access archives through the University of Ottawa. It will also be included in the NWT Recreation and Parks Association's resource manual for pool and waterfront staff. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 10, 2010 to August 30, 2010.
