Objective(s): The objectives of this research are to: 1. collect 15 lake trout, 15 whitefish and 15 herring for analysis of metals, including mercury, radionuclides and organochlorine pesticides; 2. compare the levels of the compounds with the same species near the mines in the eastern part of Great Bear Lake.

Project Description: This licence is being issued for the scientific research application no.1050. The objectives of this research are to: 1. collect 15 lake trout, 15 whitefish and 15 herring for analysis of metals, including mercury, radionuclides and organochlorine pesticides; 2. compare the levels of the compounds with the same species near the mines in the eastern part of Great Bear Lake. Fish will be collected by the RRC from fishers that are currently collecting fish offshore from Deline. The fish will be weighed, measured and sexed. Ageing structures (otoliths, scales and fin rays) will be collected to age the fish. Muscle and liver samples will be collected for metals, radionuclides and organochlorine pesticides by commercial laboratories. This project is being conducted at the request of the Deline Renewable Resources Council, who is coordinating and organising the local collection of fish. The RRC will inform their members about the collection and the results. Fish will be collected by local fishers, who will submit the fish to the RRC for processing. Data will be submitted to the Deline Renewable Resources Council upon completion of the analyses. Data will also be summarised in report form to the RRC and the funding agency. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted around Deline from February 17 to February 20, 2009.
