Objective(s): The objectives of this research are 1) to identify community health nurses current practice activities and their continuing education needs based on the Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice 2) to investigate differences in continuing education needs by: i. workplace setting (e.g. primary care, home health care, public health, family practice), ii. position held by the nurse (e.g. public health nurse, nurse practitioner, home visiting nurse), iii. total number of years of nursing and community health nursing experience, iv. Age, v. province/territory.

Project Description: This licence is issued for the scientific research application #917. The objectives of this research are 1) to identify community health nurses current practice activities and their continuing education needs based on the Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice 2) to investigate differences in continuing education needs by: i. workplace setting (e.g. primary care, home health care, public health, family practice), ii. position held by the nurse (e.g. public health nurse, nurse practitioner, home visiting nurse), iii. total number of years of nursing and community health nursing experience, iv. Age, v. province/territory. The target population for the survey will consist of a random sample of community health nurses across each province and territory in Canada. The sample will be obtained from the college of nurses registration lists from each province or territory. The researchers anticipate sampling 50 nurses from the NWT. Using the tested and modified survey from phase one, a mail-out approach will again be used for this second phase. There will be a total of 4 mailings including the actually survey and reminders. A report of the study results will be produced by May 1, 2009. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from October 15 to December 31, 2008 within the registered nursing population of the NWT.
