Project Description: This licence is issued for the scientific research application # 829. The objective of this research is to research baseline information regarding fish habitat around the hydroelectric development in Whati. . The planned fish and fish habitat assessment will identify available spawning and rearing habitats of northern pike and round whitefish, the previously identified indicator species, within the diversion reach and conduct fish sampling efforts wherever feasible to determine fish use in the area. The fish and fish habitat assessment will guide the final location of the intake canal and will assist in evaluating the potential level of impact that the proposed Project may have on fish and fish habitat within the diversion reach. Fish sampling will take place above the La Martre River Falls and sampling methods inlcude seine netting, dip-netting, minnow trapping, angling and/or electro-fishing. Data will be collected over a 3 day period and all fish will be released at point of capture. No euthenizing of fish for stomach content analysis or aging structures is required at this time. A report of the findings will be prepared and provided to the community of Whati. In addition, results of the study will likely be incorporated into a Project Description report. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from November 27 to December 31, 2008 along the La Martre River immediately upstream of the La Martre River Falls (63° 8'0.48"N, 116°54'3.50"W).
