Objective(s): The objectives of this research are: 1) to study a pair of moccasins made by Mrs. Joanne Edge, purchased at Fort Smith by the Hudsons Bay Company in 1942; 2) facilitate a beading circle with urban Aboriginal women in Edmonton, Alberta to document the contribution of beadwork to Aboriginal women's health status; and, 3) conduct interviews with elderly Aboriginal women about their experiences with beadwork.
Project Description: This licence is issued for the scientific research application #898. The objectives of this research include 1) to study a pair of moccasins made by Mrs. Joanne Edge, purchased at Fort Smith by the Hudsons Bay Company in 1942; 2) facilitate a beading circle with urban Aboriginal women in Edmonton, Alberta to document the contribution of beadwork to Aboriginal women's health status; and, 3) conduct interviews with elderly Aboriginal women about their experiences with beadwork. A series of 2-4 interviews, 2-3 hours in length, will be conducted with 4-8 women in Fort McPherson and Fort Smith. Consent will be obtained from each participant. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to review the interview transcript and the fieldwork research will be documented using photography, audio and video recordings. Research results will be communicated through a series of digital stories, video, poster, photographs and/or community report. Project outcomes may include publications, presentations and/or curriculum resources. Contact the researcher for a copy of these outputs. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 11 to December 31, 2008 in Fort McPherson and Fort Smith.
