Objective(s): This research will examine the influence of cultural interaction on certain musical forms and styles as well as how those musical forms change and persist over time.
Project Description: This research will examine the influence of cultural interaction on certain musical forms and styles as well as how those musical forms change and persist over time. This research will also look at the response of local communities to external forces on their music and how music transforms this culture. Interviews will be conducted using both specific questions and open-ended discussion, it may also include singing or other musical performance depending on the interviewee's desire and abilities. It is anticipated that the interviews will last from about 30 minutes up to two hours and will be recorded by audio and video recording equipment. A copy of the information will be sent to libraries in each of the communities, where available. In the event that there is no public library, the dissertation copy will be sent to the local school. When desired, copies of recordings and transcripts will be made available to participants. Participants will be free to involve themselves in this project at whatever capacity seems suitable. Informants, performers, interpreters, translators, community hosts and guides are welcome to participate. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 07 to August 15 in Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Inuvik, Aklavik, and Tuktoyaktuk.
