Objective(s): The project objective is to determine how near-surface wedge ice volumes are related to geomorphic setting, which reflects soil physical properties, moisture contents, and process and duration of ice formation.

Project Description: This licence was issued for the scientific research licence application number 748. The project objective is to determine how near-surface wedge ice volumes are related to geomorphic setting, which reflects soil physical properties, moisture contents, and process and duration of ice formation. Wedge ice geometry will be measured with a hand-held CRREL drill, permafrost cores extracted, and snow surveys done along previously established vegetation-snow courses. Ground temperature data will be downloaded from previously installed data loggers. Late-summer active-layer thicknesses will be measured along the vegetation-snow transects with a hand held steel probe. Sites will be accessed by vehicle, snow machine, boat, and possibly helicopter, depending on season. Work will be conducted in March, and June through August. Summer site visits will be 7-10 days with re-supply/lab work in Inuvik for 3-4 days. Winter work will be day trips from Inuvik. Copies of the thesis will be submitted to Aurora Research Institute (ARI) Library. Journal publications and poster presentations will be sent to ARI and the Hunters and Trappers Committees. There are possible opportunities for local involvement. EISC conditions and recommendations are to be followed. Fieldwork will be conducted from March 20 to April 12, and June 10 to August 29, 2008, on eleven sites in the Kendall Island Bird Sanctuary.
