Objective(s): To model runoff from wetland basins to help determine the influence of climate warming on northern water resources.
Project Description: The objective of this research is to model runoff from wetland basins to help determine the influence of climate warming on northern water resources. Fieldwork will commence with snow surveys. Sensing equipment (water level recorders, rain gauges, radiation sensors) will be installed and stream flow measurements will be taken following snowmelt. Water samples will be gathered from runoff areas. The rate of ground thaw will be measured for a variety of soil moisture and canopy density conditions. Ground thaw will be measured with a steel rod, and energy flow to the ground will be measured with a radiation sensor. Along with the airborne data on topography and canopy density, this will show how the rate of soil thaw varies and be used to estimate water drainage. Reports and publications will be sent to the communities and Aurora Research Institute. The researcher will visit band offices and government agencies, and give a public presentation in Fort Simpson/Jean Marie (depending on community preferences) for feedback. A Field Assistant will be hired. Fieldwork will be conducted from March 17 to September 20, 2008, at Scotty Creek (61° 18'N 121° 18'W), approximately 62km S of Fort Simpson, and 1.1 km north of Goose Lake.
