Objective(s): The aim of this project is to study how greenhouse gases are exchanged between tundra and atmosphere.

Project Description: The aim of this project is to study how greenhouse gases are exchanged between tundra and atmosphere. This will be related to environmental variables, such as soil and weather, to understand how climate change will impact the land, and in turn how these impacts might influence the climate. Previous measurements indicate that tundras near the Daring Lake Research Station are a net sink for CO2 during the growing season. Proposed measurements will establish the variability in this sink. Methane exchange will also be measured. Measurements will take place between May and September. CO2 exchange will be measured by established eddy covariance towers. Measurements to vegetation growth and active layer depth will be made with no disturbance of the surrounding tundra. CO2 and CH4 exchange will also be measured from small plots using a portable gas analyzer. Vegetation will be clipped in some plots to measure soil flux. These measurements are confined to small patches of tundra near the towers. Small holes will be dug to measure soil properties and small soil samples taken. Resulting research papers will be forwarded to the Aurora Research Institute, and to communities or other groups upon request. Researchers will participate in the Daring Lake Science Camp. Public lectures to schools or community groups will be given upon request. Fieldwork will be conducted from April 01 to September 30, 2008 in the vicinity of Daring Lake Terrestrial Research Station (64.83N, 111.63W), including (64.868N, 111.575W), and (64.862N, 111.571W).
