Objective(s): The goals of this project are to investigate ways of introducing man-made items into muskox habitat with minimal disturbance; test if wild muskox will physically interact with a man made addition to their habitat; test the efficacy of muskombs to collect qiviuq; present this scheme to Inuvialuit groups for the purpose of developing a qiviuq industry.
Project Description: The goals of this project are to investigate ways of introducing man-made items into muskox habitat with minimal disturbance; test if wild muskox will physically interact with a man made addition to their habitat; test the efficacy of muskombs to collect qiviuq; present this scheme to Inuvialuit groups for the purpose of developing a qiviuq industry. Maskombs were built at the ARI, shipped to Sachs Harbour and positioned at various points along Kellet River in June 2006. The sites were selected by Trevor Lucas. The maskombs were positioned by Trevor Lucas and Sharon Katz in June 2006. Trevor Lucas and John Lucas made several trips to the muskombs. However, after June 2006, no musk-oxen were in that area of the Kellett River, hence the trips were discontinued. This year the proposed sites are further up the Kellett River where musk-oxen are roaming. Positioning, monitoring and removing the maskombs at the end of the season will be done by John Lucas Sr. and Trevor Lucas. They will select the sites on the Kellett River according to the movement of the animals. Reports will be sent to Sachs Harbour HTC and the Inuvialuit Development Corporation in Inuvik. This project is managed by John Lucas Sr., a resident of Sachs Harbour. If the project proves a viable way to collect qiviuq, this would create local job opportunities and proceeds from qiviuq sales. Fieldwork will be conducted August 22 to October 31, 2007 near the Kellet River (72° 2' 3" N 124° 44' 41" W).
