Objective(s): To collect small samples of seed from grass species in six primary Genera: Festuca, Poa, Deschampsis, Leymus, Elymus and Alopecurus. The collections will be compared visually and genetically to other collections of the same or closely related species from Alaska and other circumpolar regions. These data will allow diversity determinations to be made on the species.
Project Description: The primary objective of the fieldwork is to collect small samples of seed from grass species in six primary Genera: Festuca, Poa, Deschampsis, Leymus, Elymus and Alopecurus. Other species may be collected. Wild mustard species (Crucifer species) will also be collected. The collections will be compared visually and genetically to other collections of the same or closely related species from Alaska and other circumpolar regions. These data will allow diversity determinations to be made on the species. The collections will be placed in strategic storage, and will be made available to other qualified scientists. All seed will be collected and cleaned with hand held equipment. Data will be collected with hand held global positioning receivers. Each seed sample will be 10 grams or less. No more than 300 total collections will be made in the region. Half of the seed collected during this project will be shared with Plant Genetic Resources of Canada in Saskatoon. The passport data for the plant collections will be in an excel format. These will be shared with interested parties upon request. The Aurora Research Institute will be updated with information on the project. Discussions are under way with the Aurora Research Institute on possibilities of sharing seed and expertise in collecting wild genetic plant germplasm. Fieldwork is scheduled from August 20 to September 7, 2007. Seed collecting will be limited to areas within walking distance from the communities of Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Sachs Harbour, Holman, Paulatuk, Aklavik, Tsiigehtchic, and Fort McPherson.
