Project Description: The primary objective is to collect small samples of seed from grass species in six primary Genera: Festuca, Poa, Deschampsis, Leymus, Elymus and Alopecurus. Other species may be collected. Wild mustard species (Crucifer species) will also be collected. The collections will be compared visually and genetically to other collections of the same or closely related species from Alaska and other circumpolar regions. These data will allow diversity determinations to be made on the species. All collections will be placed in strategic storage. All collections will be made available to other qualified scientists. All seed will be collected and cleaned with hand held equipment. Data will be collected with hand held global positioning receivers. Each seed samples will be 10 grams or less. No more than 300 total collections will be made in the region. Seed will be equally shared with the Government of Canada. The Aurora Research Institute will be sent information from the project, and may be involved in the sharing of seed and expertise in collection wild genetic plant germplasm. Half of the seed collected during this project will be shared with Plant Genetic Resources of Canada in Saskatoon. All seed collections will occur within walking distance from the communities of Sachs Harbour, Holman, Tuktoyuktuk, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Aklavik, Ft. McPherson and Tsiigehtchic. If possible a small collection will also occur in Kugluktuk, Nunavut. Base of operation will be out of Inuvik.
