Objective(s): The objectives of the study are to: characterize gas hydrates at Mallik using state-of-the-art well log data; collect high-quality core samples for measurement of gas hydrate production parameters (e.g. hydraulic permeability, thermal conductivity, pore water geochemistry); conduct ground temperature monitoring to depths of greater than 1 km to evaluate gas hydrate stability; integrate data to better understand natural gas hydrates and their potential as an energy resource.
Project Description: The objectives of the study are to: characterize gas hydrates at Mallik using state-of-the-art well log data; collect high-quality core samples for measurement of gas hydrate production parameters (e.g. hydraulic permeability, thermal conductivity, pore water geochemistry); conduct ground temperature monitoring to depths of greater than 1 km to evaluate gas hydrate stability; integrate data to better understand natural gas hydrates and their potential as an energy resource. Inuvialuit Oilfield Services (retained by Aurora College) will provide project management and field supervision for activities, including: ice-road construction and camp setup, transportation and site access control, drilling, well-logging, and coring. JOGMEC and NRCan will provide experienced scientists and engineers to support operational activities and undertake research and development. Approximately 20 scientists, engineers and technical support staff will be on site mid-February to mid-April. In agreement with IRC, training and employment opportunities will be available to local residents. Data and reports will be publicly released through journals, conference, and GSC publications. Community visits will be scheduled during the course of the program. The study will be conducted from February 1 to April 15, 2007 at the Mallik site, Mallik Bay, Richards Island (69°27.671', 134°39.680'), approximately 80 km north of Inuvik and 80 km west of Tuktoyaktuk. The project is located on Crown land in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR), within Significant Discovery Licence 060.
