Project Description: This study involves the assessment of valued fishes in lakes along the proposed Mackenzie Pipeline route. There is little information on fish populations in any of the smaller inland lakes of the region. Through community consultation in Fort Good Hope it was determined that Yeltea Lake should be studied. Yeltea Lake is utilized by residents for sustenance (containing lake trout, broad whitefish, jackfish, walleye, and burbot) and involves a sense of cultural identity. This study will gather baseline data of species abundance, community composition, and vital rates for valued fish populations in Yeltea Lake. Transportation to the site will be by twin otter and helicopter, and by small boat at the site. Equipment to be used includes basic fish sampling gear (gill nets, scales, measuring boards, etc.). No more than 200 fish per species will be caught. A plain language report and poster will be distributed to the Fort Good Hope community and Sahtu Renewable Resource Board. The study will be conducted from September 1-15, 2006 at the following locations: Yeltea Lake (67º 0' 48.7 N, 128º 59' 4.21 W).
