Project Description: Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) has assumed responsibility for the contaminated sites of the Indore and Beaverlodge (Hottah) Mines and is in the process of characterizing the ecological and human health and safety risks associated with the sites in order for remediation strategies to be developed. The work involves manual sampling and measurement with minimal disturbance of site conditions. Sampling involves collection of information on water, sediment, fish (species, presence, abundance, quality, habitat), soil (tailings, waste rock) and radiological characterization. No heavy equipment will be used. The field team will fly to the sites daily by airplane from Gameti. On-site transportation may include ATVs and small boats. Reports will be provided to INAC, and through INAC, to affected individuals and communities. Fieldwork will take place from August 14-31, 2006 at the following locations: Indore Mine on Hottah Lake (64º48’38.41”N, 118º21’58.77”W), and Beaverlodge Mine (also know as Hottah Mine) on Beaverlodge Lake (64º43’57.12”N, 118º10’52.52”W).
