Project Description: The main activities in this program are: 1) forming a project steering committee involving industry, aboriginal groups and government; 2) identifying plant species suitable for revegetation; 3) developing practices for commercial production; and 4) identifying employment opportunities. Seed collection will be carried out in late August through to mid-September. Sites will be accessed by boat and truck. All seed will be collected by hand. Targeted seed will be common, abundant plants which are early colonizing species. Seed will be collected from plants at sites in the Mackenzie Delta, east of the Dempster Highway between Inuvik and Tsiigehtchic, and in the vicinity of Fort Good Hope and Tulita in the Sahtu. Small amounts of seed will be collected at each site to minimize impacts and ensure genetic diversity. Germination trials, field trials and greenhouse work will be initiated in the spring. Field trial plots will be established upon existing disturbances, and maintained for a minimum of 3 years. In the winter a steering committee will be formed, composed of Government, Industry and Aboriginal Groups. Communication involving the steering committee will ensure accessibility to all interested groups. The Inuvik Community Greenhouse is involved with field and germination trials. Work will involve summer students. Fieldwork will be conducted from August 20 to September 30, 2006 at the following locations: Inuvialuit Settlement Region- Noel Lake (68° 35’30.912” N 133°36’21.708”W and 68° 32’16.512” N 133°39’21.276”W), Jimmy Lake (68° 39’20.412” N 133°40’57.432”W), Richards Island (69° 18’31.572”N 134°32’34.26”W and 69° 30’16.02” N 134°20’59.316”W), and Parsons Lake (68° 39’20.412” N 133°40’57.432”W); Gwich’in Settlement Area (Crown land only)- East of Campbell Lake east of the Dempster Highway (approx. 5 km south of Campbell Creek), east of the Dempster Highway and north of Caribou Creek, and east of the Dempster Highway and north of Rengleng River; Sahtu Settlement Area (municipal lands only)- Fort Good Hope and Tulita.
