Project Description: The purpose of the MacTung 2006 Environmental Baseline Studies is to collect additional information regarding meteorology, hydrology, aquatic resources, vegetation, terrain and wildlife in the MacTung Project area. This baseline environmental information is required to complete the environmental assessment and regulatory applications for approval of the proposed MacTung Mine project. Overland transportation of personnel to sampling sites will be conducted by foot, ATV, or helicopter. Aerial wildlife surveys will be conducted along ten transects. Surveys will be conducted during calving, fly season, and rut. These surveys will primarily focus on caribou, moose and Dall’s sheep. Large carnivores (such as wolves and grizzly bears), and raptors will also be documented. A breeding bird survey will be conducted during the breeding season within the study area to document species presence and estimate breeding densities. Bird species will be identified visually and/or by territorial calls. Hydrology, fish and water quality sampling in the Northwest Territories will be conducted on Dale Creek, Cirque Creek and the upper Tsichu River. Weather data will be collected from an existing weather station located at the MacTung Camp in the Yukon. Copies of reports will be made available to interested parties through the Aurora Research Institute. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 4 to October 31, 2006 in the MacTung project area (UTM Northing: 7 013 835 UTM Easting 449 783).
