Project Description: The objective is to obtain sufficient baseline data to develop a lead and zinc mine adjacent to the old Pine Point property. The owl survey to identify species presence and breeding territories in the vicinity of the study area will include an evening broadcast-call program that will commence 0.5 hours after sundown to 0.5 hours before sunrise in April and May. This owl survey will target the Boreal, Long-Eared, Great Grey, and Great Horned Owls. Amphibian surveys to document species presence (including at risk species: the northern leopard frog, and Canadian toad) will include three call surveys conducted on approximately April 24, May 15, and June 4 at various breeding habitats within the study area. A breeding bird survey will be conducted in June to document species presence and estimate relative densities. Bird species will be identified visually and/or by territorial calls. Stations will be distributed in proportion to the amount of habitat. Surveys will be conducted early mornings. All birds will be recorded. The objective of the rare plant survey (June - August) will be to locate rare plants that will be directly affected by the project development. It will investigate broad-leaved plants, grasses and other graminoid species. Water quality sampling will be conducted at Twin Creeks from May - August. Samples will be collected both upstream and downstream from the project area. ENR wildlife permit WL003022 has been obtained. A report will be provided, including a map showing the rare plant habitat potential, for individuals and communities in the NWT. This research will involve several local community-based field assistants. The study area will be within a 370 km2 area adjacent to the old Pine Point mine site. The following coordinates are the approximate corner locations of the study area: 60° 52’ 49.7” N; 114° 37’ 2.4” W, 60° 47’ 22.1” N; 114° 32’ 46.3” W, 60° 40’ 5.2” N; 115° 11’ 48.4”W, 60° 45’ 3.7” N; 115° 18” 9.0”W. The nearest communities are Hay River and Fort Resolution.
