Project Description: The objective of this final work on the Tuktoyaktuk Place Names Project is to review the draft of the book that reports the results of this project.The proposed benefits for completing the book on place names and stories about the land are: to provide educational material on Inuvialuit culture, history and geography for use in local schools, and to provide a book which can be enjoyed by the people of Tuktoyaktuk. It is hoped that all Inuvialuit will find the book interesting and enjoyable, and serve to stimulate conversations amongst young and old about the land and its history. The elders advising on the project will be asked to provide a title for the book that reflects the content. The title will be in Inuvialuktun, and an English translation will be provided below it. The book is to be written in relatively plain language so that it is easy for young people to read. It will be very visual with photographs of people, places and the land on most pages. The review of the draft book will be done by a committee of elders. Each page will be read out, with the assistance of interpreters, to make sure that elders know what information is presented. The meeting will be tape recorded to ensure that all corrections or additions are incorporated. All elders quoted will be visited so that they get a chance to review the information that they provided that is being used in the book. This is to ensure that their information is correct and that they are comfortable with it being used. Their narratives (quotes) will be read back to them with the assistance of an interpreter. Any new information that elders want to present or have included in the book will be copied onto separate audiotapes along with their verbal consent. The information would be included in the project transcripts. Representatives of community groups such as the TCC, THC, TEC, and THTC have been invited to participate in the review. The review of the draft book will be conducted at The Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk from November to December, 2005. No work outside the Hamlet is necessary.
