Project Description: The long term goal of this research is to develop a biogeochemical model for lakes in the Mackenzie Delta and a model for assessing the effects of stresses on rivers resulting from global change. This is year 13 of a 20 year program. Specific goals for this field season include: 1) investigating the sources and fates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in aquatic food webs of the Mackenzie Delta; 2) assessing photobleaching rates in lakes with differing compositions of colored and non-colored DOC; and 3) assessing the removal of nutrients and dissolved organic carbon from Mackenzie River water during flow through the Mackenzie Delta. The researchers will be based in Inuvik and will be collecting samples of water, algae, aquatic plants, and zooplankton at various times over the summer. The work sites are located within a cluster of lakes just to the west of Inuvik and the East Channel and a smaller cluster of lakes just north of Inuvik along the East Channel. The researchers will be able to hire a part-time research assistant as they have done in the past. They will publish the results of their work in top-ranked scholarly journals as well as on their website <http://www.sfu.ca/limnology>. The researchers plan to give a presentation when in Inuvik. The study will be conducted on the Mackenzie Delta in the vicinity of Inuvik.
