Objective(s): To identify and develop models of critical interlinkages between biogeochemical and hydrologic processes that are important to the ecological characteristics of Mackenzie Delta lakes. The long term goal of this research is to develop a model of the interactive biochemical and hydrologic processes that control the nutrient balance and primary productivity of lakes in the Mackenzie Delta region, and ultimately, a more general model for lakes associated with the floodplains and deltas of major world rivers.
Project Description: The researchers will be focused on two locations. At the Havik Pak Creek site, research will involve examining the chemistry of streamwater and the chemistry of lakes within selected sub-basins during the snowmelt period. At the NRC Lake and South Lake site, the research will involve measuring how well algae communities are able to grow when they experience concentrations of suspended sediments over different lengths of time.
