Objective(s): The general objective of the program is to obtain information with respect to subsurface conditions at the site by drilling up to fifty boreholes to depths ranging from sixteen to twenty metres. The specific objectives of the program are to characterize subsurface soil and ice conditions; delineate the thickness of the active layer and any interfaces between frozen and unfrozen ground; collect undisturbed samples of both frozen and unfrozen ground; obtain data on ground temperatures and install ground temperature monitoring equipment; and obtain data on drill penetration rates in various subsurface conditions. In addition to the land-based sites, holes may be drilled through the ice to obtain riverbed information beneath the adjacent channel. The information gathered will be used to design the foundations for buildings, structures and facilities.
