Objective(s): The objective of this study is to understand the process whereby Aboriginal elders in the community of Fort Smith have engaged in exploring and responding to historical events over the past century. These accounts have not yet been collected or analyzed in any systematic fashion. This study will describe Aboriginal elders' experiential and culturally based perceptions of community history, as compared to western accounts, and will explore whether these perspectives have influenced strategies used to relate to western institutions. A collaborative approach to research involving elders and community organizations is planned. At this time, the researcher will conduct interviews with Metis elders only.
