Project Description: The Amundsen Gulf Survey is a continuation of the Sachs Harbour Project begun in 1999. The survey will examine the benthic resources near the Inuvialuit communities of Sachs Harbour, Holman and Paulatuk. The survey will begin about the beginning of August in Sachs Harbour and will remain near Sachs for approximately 2 week before being picked up by the Laurier. Ship time limits work to approximately 5-7 days near each of the communities of Holman and Paulatuk. Two types of surveys will be conducted; hydroacoustic surveys for bottom type and water depth followed by photographic surveys, which will quantify the major organisms living on the bottom. Traps and fishing gear will collect specimens such as fish and crabs. SCUBA diving will be used to collect clams and other organism. The survey will near the end of August. Equipment/sampling devices include: underwater camera system, QTC view seabed classification system, longline, gill nets, crab/shrimp pots, ponar grab, niskin water bottles, scuba diving. Clams, scallops, cucumbers, urchins, crab and fish will collected as samples. It is anticipated that no more than 1000 individuals of each species will be collected.
