Project Description: The overall goal of this study is to lay the foundation for the development of a successful and effective integration of traditional knowledge with natural area management systems using the case study of the Thelon Canadian Heritage River as an example. This research will take place over 2 four month periods where the researcher will live in the community and conduct interviews with consenting individuals. Individuals from the following groups will be consulted: government representative, non-governmental organizations and local community representatives. This is a fundamental initial step in the improvement of not only natural area management in the Canadian north but also in the validation of indigenous culture as contemporary to current and future society.
