Objective(s): To investigate the water course in order to determine if local species of fish are utilizing the habitat. The study is required by the NWT Water Board for the Bluefish Hydro Electric Plant, located on the Yellowknife River. To accomplish this, the researchers will make detailed measurements of existing habitat in the original Yellowknife River between Bluefish Dam and the trailrace of the power generation facilities and access fish habitat utilization between the dam and the trailrace.

Project Description: Transportation to Bluefish Hydro Electric Plant is by boat from the Miramar Con Mine Dock at Prosperous Lake. Two one day field trips to the Plant are scheduled during the collection period. Equipment to be utilized include gill or seine nets, Gee traps, backpack electrofishing unit, water flow meter, water sample bottles, canoe and outboard motor. Sample species include whitefish, lake trout, northern pike. Nets will be check frequently (intervals not greater than 30 minutes) and fish will be released alive. Measurements and observations of stream channel and flow characteristics, stream bed and streambank conditions and fish cover components will be recorded on standard DFO/BCMOE stream survey forms.
