Objective(s): To examine the question, how does home schooling reflect choice and empowerment for parents choosing the type of schooling they prefer for their children? Specifically, it will examine: how extensively is the phenomena of home schooling in the North; what policies do NWT Education and School Boards have on home schooling; what reasons are identified by parents for such a choice; how does home schooling reflect parental concerns; and, where home schooling parents have chosen to re-enroll their children in the school system, how does this action reflect parental empowerment in the choice of the children's education.
Project Description: School Principals will be contacted during the 1995/96 school year to collect data on the number of students involved in home schooling in each community. In the towns of Fort Smith, Hay River, and Yellowknife, parents of home schooling children will be contacted through principals to participate in tape recorded interviews. Data collection will be limited to mail, phone, FAX, and personal contacts.
