Objective(s): To explore and attempt to characterize the links between the context of what is being called Indigenous Environmental Knowledge and the cultural complex which forms and articulates the content of the knowledge in specific practices and in terms of the Dene cultural of Fort Good Hope as a whole. It is hoped that this research might be a step towards demonstrating the intimate connection that exists between the knowledge and the cultural world in which it is embedded and the hazards in extracting this knowledge from the context that gives it life.
Project Description: The researcher will utilize a participatory style of ethnographic research to expand on the research done in 1990 by the Dene Cultural Institute. Participant research observations and local opportunity to shape the direction of the research will be encouraged. Semistructured and unstructured interviews will be conducted according to strict ethical guidelines negotiated through a contract process with the community council of Fort Good Hope
