Objective(s): To document the annual frequency of consumption of fish and wildlife species by interviewing households in Sanikiluaq; to demonstrate the variety of traditional food products prepared and consumed from these species; to examine the degree of preference for selected traditional and store-bought foods, among adults and children; to provide insight into the continuing cultural and social importance of traditional foods to Inuit living in the Belcher Islands; and to develop a data base in the community for baseline information to assess and monitor the benifits and potential risks of consuming traditional foods.

Project Description: Two researchers from Sanikiluaq will conduct interviews with a household food frequency questionnaire, a food preference questionnaire and a 24-hour recall of daily food consumption. All households in the community will be interviewed to determine the frequency of food use and food preference and a stratefied sample will be asked to recall foods consumed in a 24 hour period. This study will document the frequency of consumption of traditional foods.
