Objective(s): To quantitatively describe key ecosystem components affecting processes in a subarctic Picea mariana ecosystem; to conduct a detailed monitoring of experimental rehabilitation treatments designed to manipulate disturbances initiated within this ecosystem that were themselves a simulation of a transport corridor; to test, under controlled field conditions, several rehabilitation/treatments and determine their relative merits over the short- and long-term time frame.
Project Description: The research will continue to monitor the effects of disturbance to a site 10 km north of Fort Norman. Trees were cleared and the soil was trenched in 1985 and 1986, and crude oil was spilled in 1988. The researchers are monitoring air and soil temperatures, wind speed, moisture, water movement, permafrost and snow characteristics, plants and animals in order to understand how the ecosystem responds to these types of disturbances.
