Objective(s): To document the sex, maturity, reproductive status, length, weight and condition (using blubber thickness) of ringed seals taken in the Sachs Harbour and Holman harvests; to determine if seal condition is related to reproductive success, to determine effects of environmental factors such as ice conditions and food availability on seal condition and reproduction; to collect samples for contaminant analyses to determine contaminant levels in seals.

Project Description: In response to concerns raised by the HTC's of Sachs Harbour and Holman regarding the health of ringed seal populations in the region, the Fisheries Joint Management Committee sponsored a study to examine trends in seal condition and reproduction. The harvests of seals by the two communities will be monitored and samples will be taken to determine the level of contaminants in this population.
