Objective(s): To determine the dive habits and movements of bowhead whales during the open water feeding season; to determine the movements and dive habits of bowhead whales during the westward fall migration through Canadian and U.S. Beaufort Sea and possibly Chukchi and Bering Seas; to examine the sight tenacity, rates of speed and diving patterns of whales in association with physical oceanographic features such as bottom depth, proximity to ice and sea surface temperature; to determine if there are differences in dive patterns, migratory timing and migration rates of various age, sex and reproductive classes while in the Beaufort Sea;
Project Description: The Researchers will tag 12 bowhead whales. They will study how the whales move about during the feeding season and where and when they migrate west out of the Beaufort Sea. They will determine whether the migratory routes or timing vary between different kinds of animals and will determine the dive habits of the tagged animals.
