Objective(s): To investigate four specific aspects of government's tourism strategy in the Northwest Territories: to assess the significance of tourism to the cash economies of Baffin Island Inuit communities active in the industry and identify links between tourism and other sectors of northern village and regional economies; to identify whether tourism-generated monies are sufficient to meet rising local harvesting costs or instead are used to replace country foods with store foods; to study the intra-settlement and cross-cultural dynamics related to Inuit-visitor interactions.
Project Description: This investigation will provide an analytical perspective on two aspects of northern tourism important to an understanding of the overall direction of economic development in comtemporary Eastern Arctic Inuit communities.
