Objectif(s): To conduct a Phase II Environmental Assessment to delineate the horizontal and vertical extent of uranium contaminated soil along the Great Bear River portion of the Northern Transportation Route (NTR).

Description du projet: The Phase II Environmental Assessment is designed to delineate the horizontal and vertical extent of uranium contaminated soil along the Great Bear River portion of the Northern Transportation Route (NTR). The soil quality and quantity information gathered during this assessment is required to assist in the development of future remediation plans for this segment of the NTR. The field program includes soil sampling using portable hand operated electric drilling equipment equipped with hollow-stem augers, soil analytical testing program including arsenic, uranium and Ra226, drilling to a maximum depth of 2 m, near surface computer assisted radiological survey (CARS) at all sites known to exhibit elevated gamma radiation and reconnaissance level CARS along the historic haul route from the Upper Shipyard to Great Bear River Landing. The project reporting includes the completion of draft and final reports in digital and hard copy formats, preparation of summary report for the Aurora Research Institute and presentation of program findings to community members in Deline and in Tulita. The work plan has provision for assistance from the communities of Deline and Tulita. This assistance includes provision of camp services, guide services and transportation to and from the work sites. These requirements were discussed during recent meetings with the leaders and elders of Deline and Tulita. The public information sessions conducted as part of the project scope will follow from the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Office commitment to provide local communities with information related to the condition of the subject sites. Information sessions will be held at Deline and Tulita. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 1, 2011 to August 31, 2011.
