Objectif(s): The goal of this study is to collect lake sediment cores from shallow lakes to quantify the impact of past climate change on the vegetation and lakes of the area.
Description du projet: The goal of this study is to collect lake sediment cores from shallow lakes to quantify the impact of past climate change on the vegetation and lakes of the area. Sediment cores from the bottom of 2 lakes in the region will be collected. A 10 day camp of 3 people will be set up at 71°43'12"N, 122°02'31"W. Transportation will be by Twin Otter to the camp, and by walking to the lakes. No gas powered equipment will be used. A hand auger will be used to drill holes through the ice. Sediment cores will be retrieved using a hand operated piston corer. Nothing will be left on the site and the sediment cores will be sent to the laboratory in Ottawa for analysis. The report will be filed and a copy sent to the Sachs Harbour Hunters and Trappers Committee. Copies of the report and related publications will be sent to the Aurora Research Institute. Fieldwork will be conducted from May 19 to June 30, 2008 on Banks Island, at 71°43'12"N, 122°02'31"W, approximately 115km from Sachs Harbour.
