Objectif(s): Sea ice is decreasing at an alarming rate throughout the northern hemisphere. The leader of this project is a specialist in the processes which drive sea ice growth and decay. The project team will collect information which can be used to produce better estimates of sea ice concentration. This will be done from an aerial survey platform using passive microwave satellite remote sensing information. Each of four surveys will be about 4 hours in duration. The information obtained will be presented to the Inuvialuit Game Council so that they can get an appreciation of how the sea ice concentrations have been changing in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region over the period 1978 to 2003. The survey aircraft will have a digital camera, a shortwave pyranometer and a surface temperature sensor. This information will allow the researchers to more precisely calibrate the satellite data.
