Objectif(s): Under instruction from Natural Resources Canada Climate change program, this project aims to: (1) examine Northwest Victoria Island for evidence of glacial and sea level changes associated with the Younger Dryas cooling period that affected the northern hemisphere eleven thousand years ago; and (2) determine from proxy geological records when the Northwest Passage will open as a result of the reduction in sea ice following the continuing decline of the Arctic Ocean sea ice cover. This work will involve two researchers based out of light 2-person camps established by Polar Continental Shelf Project Twin Otter from Resolute. From the camps, researchers will travel by foot and ATV, observing elevations of fossil marine fauna and flora on raised beaches (mainly shells and driftwood) and examining material exposed in natural exposures (e.g., river banks).
