Objectif(s): Economic opportunities in traditional forestry (i.e. timber production) in the area are limited due to the slow tree growth rates and distances to markets. The 'Developing Sustainable Non-timber Forest Products' project will provide an initial assessment of local business opportunities in non-timber forest products. This project will identify some potential products, identify their distribution and abundance (sustainability), and undertake market research.

Description du projet: The distribution and abundance of some potential non-timber forest products (berries) will be assessed based on the results of community interviews and field studies. The number of berries in various forest stands in the Gwich'in Settlement Area will be quantified. No berries will be picked. Berries will be quantified by counting by hand. Sites for berry counting will be accessed by boat or road. Community interviews will be carried out to determine general attitudes on berries, to quantify the harvest levels, and the end use of those berries. Participation in the study is voluntary, and all participants will sign a consent form.
