Objectif(s): First, to survey numerous headwater streams and three lakes to determine if habitats in these waterbodies are used by fish species. When fish are found to be present, these habitats will be included in a compensation agreement. Second, to continue baseline data collection for the long-term monitoring program initiated in the 1995 field season. This long term program was designed to monitor key sites in the Koala Watershed, thus allowing the detection of potential impacts on the proposed diamond mining operation.
Description du projet: The techniques to be used for the assessment of the fisheries in the Lac de Gras area will include small-mesh (1.5 inch) gillnetting, trapnetting (mark-recapture program), minnow-trapping and electroshocking (backpack model for stream surveys). Most fish will be live-released. A select number of fish will be retained (killed), for aging verification (using otoliths), tissue metals concentration and diet analyses, from each of the lakes and streams. Transportation between Koala Camp and the study sites will be provided by truck along a short road network near camp or by helicopter.
