Objectif(s): To deveolp sampling techniques appropriate to the large marine ecosystem (or LME) approach; to teach these techniques to the community so that they may implement them in their sanctuary plans and operation of the Baffin Ecosystem Monitoring Station at Igalirtuuq ; to obtain another season of data with respect to our hypothesis that bowhead habitat productivity is a reflection of regional climatic and oceanographic conditions; to determine numbers, distribution and movements of bowheads; to provide data on behavior of bowheads; to document feeding patterns; and to study the larger scale movements of bowheads in Baffin Bay.
Description du projet: The study will be conducted from the permanent station on Nipple Hill at Nuvuktiapik. Surveyor instruments will be used to document whale numbers and their feeding behavior in Aqvik and Kater Valleys. The research team will attach as many as four radio tags in order to learn more about the feeding behavior and depth that the whales are feeding at. The team will also photograph the whales and use a submarine equipped with cameras.
