Objectif(s): To investigate the long-term stability of the vegetation of two arctic "oases", Polar Bear Pass on Bathurst Island and Hot Weather Creek on Ellesmere Island; to collect pollen samples for analysis; to calibrate the relationships between the modern pollen rain and the modern vegetation.
Description du projet: This study will investigate the long-term stability of the arctic "oases" of Polar Bear Pass and Hot Weather Creek by the pollen analyses of lake sediment cores. The sediment that accumulates in the bottom of lakes provides a history of the conditions in the lake. The pollen incorporated in the sediment can be interpreted to give an idea of the climate and vegetation for the past several thousand years in the region surrounding the lake.
