Objectif(s): To provide an accurate and complete information base of the traditional laws, rules, mores, values and the means used to establish and maintain social control within a Dene community, based on the oral testimony of the Dene elders; to document the extent to which traditional laws, rules, mores, values and mechanisms for ensuring social control are practiced today; to assess which Dene practices might be restored, legitimized, and/or incorporated into Canadian common law and local self-government mechanisms;
Description du projet: The Dene Traditional Justice Case Study will document the traditional laws and justice mechanisms of the Dogrib people. The research will address concerns about the effectiveness of the current justice system for Dene in the Northwest Territories. Local Dogrib researchers will be trained and employed to carry out the work.
