Summary:
My research is about cracks in permafrost that have been filled in with wind-blown sand. In cliffs, these filled-in crackes appear as `veins' of sand. I will record the distribution and characteristics of these veins of sand. This information may help to determine the history behind how the cracks formed and the environmental conditions of the Mackenzie Delta up to 40,000 years ago....

1990 Summary:
This survey will take place from a ship travelling through the Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay region. The researchers will collect information on the history and characteristics of the seabed. Some samples of sediments on the seafloor will be taken for further analyses. Transfer of a few of the ship's crew may take place at Cape Dorset but all other activities will take place in locations remote ...

19901988 Summary:
This study will provide a better understanding of permafrost conditions in the high arctic as well as the environmental conditions that lead to permafrost formation. Study sites include the Fosheim Peninsula on Ellesmere Island and May Point and Mokka Fiord on eastern Axel Heiberg Island....

1992199119881987 Summary:
The aim of projects 1 and 2 is to learn how plants returned to the arctic following the retreat of the ice sheet that covered Ellesmere Island some 8000 years ago. This research will also help to determine what effect climate warming will have for the plant communities of the high arctic. Project 3 will involve the filming of plant life in the high arctic. Project 4 is part of an on-going study...

1992 Summary:
It is believed that during the last ice-age on northern Ellesmere Island, Lake Hazen was `pushed' further south as a result of the presence of glaciers. The researchers are investigating the Lake Hazen Basin area to determine the nature of this ancient lake. Sediment samples will be taken from both Lake Hazen as well as the surrounding area to study the past environment and organisms (now fossils...

Summary:
The Mackenzie River Valley, from Wrigley to Fort Good Hope, will be surveyed in order to document the nature of the river prior to the last glaciation. Sediments will be sampled in order to determine their age (using radiocarbon dating techniques). Field work will take place along the Mackenzie River between Wrigley and the mouth of the Redstone River, in the lower section of Gt. Bear River, and...

19911989 Summary:
The goal of our ongoing project is to collect samples of mud from the bottom of several undisturbed lakes on southern Baffin Island. In the laboratory, we will then examine the chemistry, texture and fossils found in this mud in an effort to document how the environment (mainly climate) of this region has changed over the past 2000 years. We hope that this work will eventually aid efforts to imp...

Summary:
Stromatolites are variously shaped mounds or reefs composed of sediments and the fossilized remains of single-celled marine organisms called blue-green algae. There are massive fossil reefs located on Baffin Island which are some of the largest known of their age. By studying the structure, form and chemical make-up of these reefs, information about the ancient ocean and the growth of ancient re...

1992 Summary:
This project continues to examine the history of plant communities in the Mackenzie River and Delta regions over the past 15,000 years. Using a hand auger, core samples of sediments are taken from lake bottoms and the sediments are analyzed for the presence of pollen and diatoms. Radiocarbon dating, a technique used to estimate age, will estimate when certain species were present in the past....

Summary:
In previous years research, we have been able to prove the existence of an early opening of the Hudson Strait at the end of the last Ice Age, and to establish 4 important source areas for ice flows into Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay. Our 1992 work will permit us to expand and complete the work on several offshore islands, as well as sample from an exposure of old marine sediments in the Deception ...
